Buildings, projects and ideas from Kelsall Architects

KA 'Design Gym'

Kelsall Architects is a design-led practice, that’s why we're always looking for ways to improve and grow as designers. Design is a muscle that needs exercising regularly in order to be in tip-top condition. So every week, we kick off our Monday mornings with our very own 'Design Gym'

We take turns analysing case studies of excellent building precedents to learn from other great architects. It's a mental workout that keeps our creative muscles toned and ready to take on any challenge. We’re committed to pushing the boundaries of design and delivering excellence every time. See a selection of our favourite buildings here.

Naomi’s choice

Entopia Cambridge

I’ve chosen the Cambridge Entopia because it is apparently the largest EnerPHit certified office building in the UK. It took a no compromise approach which demonstrates what is possible when the right client, design team and contractor get together. This level of deep retrofit does come at a cost though, at £4250/ m2 this kind of project is about letting the world know what to aim for. Architype and Feilden+Mawson were the architects on the scheme.

Edinburgh Printmakers

Entering its fourth year in operation, my recent trip to Edinburgh Printmakers proved to be an insightful experience in how to successfully repurpose a large derelict Grade II Listed factory (originally the headquarters of the North British Rubber Company) into a fun mixed-used creative hub. Page\Park architects’ thoughtful use of clean and playful alterations allows the new spaces to be viewed as a harmonious continuation of the building’s story.

New Library
Magdelaine College

The New Library Magdalene College in Cambridge, by Niall McLaughlin Architects gets my vote. This building tops my list because it is an exercise in organisational and structural rigour, without losing any of the warmth and joyfulness of great design. Its sequence of spaces, coupled with double and triple height volumes, manages to be uber rational, whilst still uplifting your spirits in the way only great architecture can.

Liam’s Choice

Windermere Jetty Museum

Maybe I am biased towards its location, but for me the contemporary detailing of the museum provides a stunningly simple form set against an incredible backdrop. Carmody Groarke located the collection of structures to take you on a journey of the museum’s historic collections, its restoration process to it’s working docks, with carefully framed views through the site and across the lake. A simple design executed to the highest detail gives an appreciation for it’s context.
